Scarborough in January

Paragon Hotel and North Bay Scarborough in the snowYou’ve had the excesses of Christmas, you’ve made your new year’s resolutions (get out more, get more healthy), so what could be better than a winter stroll on the beach, penny slots and a hot chocolate overlooking the harbour or a crashing sea.

And we do have crashing seas. From here until the spring tides, the roads get closed, the sea rages in and the people of Scarborough gather to meet it, cameras in hand.

You’ll remember 2010 as the year of the snows. What could be better than sunrise over a snow covered beach? Or a walk around Peasholm Park after snowfall?

The air here is clear and pure, it comes to us over nothing but sea. It’s the perfect place to detox your Christmas head, reconnect with the simple pleasures, and get straight for the year.

Those crystal clear winter days are more numerous than you might think, and we can prove it. Our web developer has a webcam pointing over South Bay (we face North Bay but .. it’s the same weather), and he captures the midday picture every day, here’s January’s picture calendar and you can see, it’s mostly either a clear, sunny, winter’s day, or it’s snowing. Either is magical. Click it for a larger view.
